IntroductionCollege, Carlton, and Gerrard Streets have been served by streetcars since as early as 1861 (depending on the portion of the route), before electric streetcars even existed. Horses would pull small carriages along rails in the middle of the street which were built to provide a smoother ride to passengers, and it was not until 1894 that Toronto’s streetcars were completely electrified. The 506 streetcar as we know it today has come to be one of the most heavily-used surface routes in the system, stretching 15km through the heart of Toronto. The evolution of the transit itself has not been the only change. The development around the route has shaped itself into forming some of Toronto's most distinct communities. Those communities will be examined with analysis and photos, starting at Main Street Subway Station, proceeding west across the entire route to High Park Loop. To begin, click on Main Street near the subway station.
